Students thrive in SUSTech-KCL biomedical science exchange program
On August 9, 2019, fifteen students from Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) successfully defended their research projects at King’s College of London (KCL) as part of the SUSTech-KCL summer exchange program and received their certification of completion with high marks. This is the first overseas exchange program for biomedical sciences undergraduate students from SUSTech Medical School. It gives opportunities for students to study and do research in an internationally renowned university for life sciences and medicine. The SUSTech School of Medicine selected 15 top students from biomedical sciences major to partake in the exchange, along with faculty members.Professor Richard Trembath, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine at KCL, welcomed all the SUSTech representatives and praised the students’ accomplishments. Lung cancer indicators improve under SUSTech research
The role of circular RNAs (circRNAs) in tumors is becoming increasingly apparent. Recently, circHIPK3, one circular RNA of HIPK3 gene has been found to play an important role in tumor growth and progression, but its role in lung cancer has not been elucidated.Late in June, a research group co-chaired by Associate Professor Chen Guoan of the School of Medicine at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) published an article in international journal Autophagy (IF 11.1) entitled “Circular RNAcircHIPK3modulates autophagy viaMIR124-3p-STAT3-PRKAA/AMPKα signaling in STK11 mutant lung cancer.” The paper sought to reveal the role of circHIPK3 in lung cancer and the new mechanism of regulating the autophagic pathway.CircRNAs are covalently-closed, single-stranded transcripts derived from pre-mRNAs. Discovered in the 1970s, they were then regarded as a rare product arising from mRNA splicing errors. Their ab...

SUSTech discusses joint undergraduate training for clinical medicine
Last week, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) hosted a meeting for transnational-education (TNE) undergraduate program in clinical medicine. The meeting, organized by the SUSTech School of Medicine, invited experts from across mainland China to discuss the training of undergraduates in clinical medicine. SUSTech Vice President Lu Chun attended the meeting.Prof. Zhang Wenyong, Associate Director of Undergraduate Education of SUSTech School of Medicine, briefed the audience about the undergraduate program within a TNE cooperative system. The experts discussed various elements of professional training modes, curriculum setting and teacher strengths, before presenting some recommendations. The attending experts agreed that SUSTech School of Medicine, being developed in conjunction with King’s College London (KCL), bears all the requirements of an internationalized clinical medicine program that meets national...
